Education & National Awareness

Creating national awareness around issues that effect the children and families of our Nation.

Promoting Awareness with Our Multi-Pronged Strategy

At Sunchild Child & Family Services, we use a layered approach to drive national awareness around critical issues affecting Indigenous children and families:

1

Advocacy

We amplify voices and champion policy reform by engaging with local, provincial, and national decision-makers.
2

Promotions

Through campaigns, storytelling, and partnerships, we elevate key messages aligned with reconciliation and child-first principles.
3

Education

We embed Indigenous perspectives and culturally informed content into learning opportunities for staff, stakeholders, and the broader public.
4

Online Awareness

Using social media, webinars, and multimedia, we connect with audiences across Canada to spread impactful, accessible messages.

What Are the 94 Calls to Action and Jordan’s Principle?

The 94 Calls to Action stem from the final report of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. They set out concrete steps to redress the legacy of residential schools, including education reform, justice, culture, child welfare, and health. These calls serve as a roadmap toward systemic change and reconciliation.

Jordan’s Principle is a child-first legal principle ensuring that First Nations children can access necessary services—like health, education, or social supports—without delay due to jurisdictional disputes. The government department first contacted must pay, and resolve funding issues afterward.

How Sunchild Implements These Initiatives

Governance

  • Embedding alignment with both the 94 Calls to Action and Jordan’s Principle into our strategic planning and leadership priorities.
  • Ensuring policies reflect child-first principles, especially in crisis or urgent situations.
  • Continuously monitoring national progress to inform local policy and advocacy.

Operations

  • Designing staff training focused on rights-based approaches, trauma-informed care, and cultural safety.
  • Developing promotional and educational materials that explain the Calls to Action and Jordan’s Principle in plain language.
  • Leveraging online platforms to broaden reach and public understanding through storytelling, infographics, and interactive learning.

Client-Facing Service Delivery

  • Guaranteeing children and families understand their rights under Jordan’s Principle, and facilitating requests for services promptly.
  • Collaborating with First Nations partners and regional service coordinators to ensure swift service provision.
  • Incorporating cultural and holistic healing into all service offerings, including those funded through Jordan’s Principle.
  • Tracking how our programs align with Calls to Action, and sharing outcomes with funders, partners, and the community.

A Pathway to Equity

Sunchild’s commitment to Education & National Awareness is more than just communication—it’s a pathway to justice and equity. By weaving together advocacy, education, and child-centered action, we not only raise awareness about the 94 Calls to Action and Jordan’s Principle—we live these principles in our governance, operations, and services. In doing so, we strive to give families the support, dignity, and respect they deserve.
